Here in Illinois, RPZ (Reduced Pressure Zone) devices are used to protect that potable water supply from contamination due to backflow. RPZ devices are required for certain types of commercial and residential buildings.
What is a Backflow Device ?
A backflow prevention device keeps your water clean. It stops water from flowing backwards into your house or business and contaminating the water supply. Water usually flows out of taps, showers, and other fixtures at high pressure.
RPZ devices are designed to prevent backflow by creating a physical barrier between the potable water supply and any potential sources of contamination, such as irrigation systems, fire sprinklers, or chemical feeders. In the event of a backflow situation, the RPZ device will divert the contaminated water to a drain, rather than allowing it to enter the potable water supply. An RPZ device is typically required when there is a potential for backflow of non-potable water or other substances into the potable water supply.
