  • Possible Reasons why your Home Drains are Clogging.

Prevent Clogs in Your Home Plumbing System and Drains.

Professional Plumbing from HT Strenger Plumbing.

As a homeowner, few things are as frustrating as dealing with drain clogs. They always seem to occur at the most inconvenient times, precisely when you rely on your drains the most. Unfortunately, these issues often linger without quick resolution.

Even if you successfully unclog a drain using plungers or chemical cleaners, it may only be a temporary fix. The root causes of clogs remain unaddressed, particularly when it comes to chemical drain cleaners, which can even harm your pipes in the long run.

Take a look at some of these culprits of common household-drain clogs.

    Hair, Dirt & Soap Residue.

Over time, shower and bath water combined with hair, soap scum, and dirt accompany everything down the drain. Ideally, all of this would flow smoothly into the sewer system. However, reality isn’t so perfect. Accumulation occurs, trapping additional debris as it journeys through the drain. Eventually, this buildup leads to stubborn clogs that require a professional plumber with hydro- rodding or jetting services for effective clearing.

    Food & Organic Waste.

When your kitchen sink clogs, it’s likely due to an accumulation of excessive food waste in the drain. While it’s best to prevent any food waste from entering the drain—even if you have a garbage disposal—sometimes it becomes unavoidable. Certain types of food waste, such as coffee grounds, tea leaves, grease, and oil, are particularly prone to causing clogs. Unlike other organic matter, these substances don’t readily degrade; instead, they compact over time, solidifying and obstructing the flow.

    Mineral Build-Up Over Time.

If your home has hard water, mineral buildup can gradually accumulate in your drains. Over time, these minerals—such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium—cling to the interior of pipes, potentially constricting the flow. Additionally, this buildup can trap substances that typically flow down drains, leading to further accumulation.

To manage mineral buildup, consider regular descaling. This process involves removing sediment and excess minerals caused by hard water.

Remember, addressing mineral buildup promptly can help maintain efficient drainage and prevent costly plumbing issues.

Flushed Items – Paper & Disposable Wipes.

When we use excessive toilet paper in a single flush, we’re well aware of the potential consequences (for the uninitiated, it’s almost a guarantee of clogging!). While plunging usually resolves this issue, not all toilet paper that enters the drain reaches the sewer.

Stray fragments of toilet paper can adhere to the drain walls and accumulate over time. This gradual buildup leads to more frequent clogs and may even result in toilet overflow. Fortunately, a plumber can inspect and clean your drain to prevent this recurring problem.

Just like any other items that find their way into drains, objects that clearly don’t belong there—such as sanitary napkins, disinfecting wipes, toys, clothing, and even rocks—can lead to clogs. When faced with such situations, homeowners invariably require a plumber’s assistance. Removing an object from a drain can be a complex process, often involving the disassembly or removal of toilets and drain traps to access the lodged items and clear the stubborn clog.

Tree Roots & Growth in Exterior Drains.

Surprisingly, roots from trees, shrubs, and other plant life can lead to drain clogs. These roots naturally seek moisture underground and grow toward its source. Even minor cracks in your drainpipes, allowing a tiny water leak, can attract these roots. Once inside the pipes, roots rapidly expand, obstructing the proper flow of wastewater and sewage.

  • Valuable Plumbing Tips & Information for all New Homeowners

Understanding the basics of plumbing is essential for any new homeowner couple. Quickly identifying and potentially addressing minor issues before they escalate into costly repairs.

Familiarize yourselves with your home’s plumbing system, you will save money on plumber expenses and prevent costly water damage. A basic understanding of plumbing allows you to make informed decisions about home maintenance and improvements.

While it’s crucial knowing when to call a professional, a solid foundation in plumbing can provide peace of mind and save you from unexpected plumbing emergencies.

Here are some tips & information to get a handle on your homes plumbing system.

    1. Always have an Emergency – Around the Clock – Licensed Plumber on your Speed Dial.

Introduce yourself to your Local Licensed Plumber – They can make sure you are covered in any Emergency Situation. Plumbing Service Companies with 24/7/365 plumbing services will be there when or if they are needed.

Our Local Service Number is 847-234-9440

    2. Locate your home’s Main Water Shutoff Valve.

A burst pipe can cause a lot of damage to your home. To help prevent this, it’s important to know where to turn off the water. This is called the water shutoff valve.

If your home has a basement or crawlspace, look for the valve on a wall near the front of your house. If your home doesn’t have a basement, check the garage or near the water heater.

Learn to operate it and check valve handle for ease of motion to on/off.

    3. Locate all Individual Shutoff Valves.

Beyond the main water shutoff, most sinks, toilets, and appliances have their own individual water valves.

These valves are usually located behind the fixture. Being able to turn off water to just one area can be helpful when fixing a leak or dealing with an emergency.

It’s a good idea to know where all of these water valves are located in your home.

This information is especially important when you first move in.

    4. Recognize the Signs of a Plumbing Leak.

If you notice puddles of water forming near a wall, it could be a sign of a water leak. Other indicators include discoloration or texture changes on the wall or ceiling. A musty smell often accompanies water damage and can signal the growth of mold or mildew. If you hear water dripping sounds, it’s likely that the leak is ongoing.

These signs are often indicative of a more serious problem. It’s important to address water damage promptly to prevent further issues and potential health risks associated with mold growth.

    5. Have an Emergency Plumbing Kit.

Having these basic tools on hand can save you time, money, and frustration when dealing with plumbing issues.

Instead of relying on harsh chemicals, consider stocking up on non-chemical plumbing tools. A cup plunger can tackle clogs in sinks, tubs, and showers, while a flange plunger is designed for toilets. For minor blockages, a hand-crank drain snake can be a lifesaver. An adjustable wrench comes in handy for removing the P-trap under your sink. A utility bucket is essential for catching water from leaky pipes. Don’t forget plumber’s tape for fixing leaky showerheads and duct tape as a temporary fix for larger leaks until the plumber arrives.

    6. Avoid and Prevent Clogged Drains.

To prevent clogs, avoid putting anything but water and toilet paper down the toilet. Keep food scraps, grease, and oil out of kitchen drains. Use mesh drain covers in sinks and showers to catch hair and soap scum. For general drain maintenance, pour a pot of boiling water down each drain once a month to help clear away buildup.

    7. Observe during rainstorms how water moves away from from your home.

Water during rainstorms should move away and not towards your home. Proper Drainage and landscape pitching can keep water from damaging and filling your home with overflow water.

    8. Test and Observe your Sump Pump for smooth operation.

To test your sump pump, first ensure it’s plugged in and the area around it is clear of debris. Manually activate the pump by lifting the float switch; it should turn on and pump water out. Regularly inspect the pump, float switch, and discharge pipe for any clogs, damage, or obstructions to maintain optimal performance.

Listen and observe pump when discharging during rain and snow melt. Look and listen for smooth quiet operation.

    9. Request a Plumbing Inspection from a State Licensed Plumber.

Introduce yourself to your Local Licensed Plumber – They can make sure you are covered in any Emergency Situation. Plumbing Service Companies with 24/7/365 plumbing services will be there when or if they are needed.

Sump Pump Care Tips – Sump Pump Tune-up.

Most homeowners understand they have a primary (AC powered) sump pump in their basement or crawl space to protect them from flooding. What happens if you lose power ?

Are you prepared with a Sump Pump Back Up System ?

Replace your Back-Up battery every two years with a New Battery.

IF/WHEN the power goes out (or the fuse blows, or the circuit breaker trips, or the power cord gets pulled out), your primary pump won’t run and you will flood.

    Primary Pump Failure is Inevitable.

IF/WHEN your primary pump fails due to a clog or other mechanical problem, you will flood.

    Check your Float Switch

IF/WHEN the float switch on your primary pump gets stuck or doesn’t activate, you will flood. If you don’t have a backup sump pump, you don’t have a sump pump at all! That’s because ALL sump pumps eventually fail, and without a good backup system, you won’t know the pump has failed until you have a flood! Everybody with a sump basin should have both a primary and a backup system.

    Add an Additional Battery

Having a second battery connected to your backup system will give you approximately twice as much run time without AC power. If you live in an area that experiences long power outages, this is a nice feature to have….

  • The ABC of Plumbing

The ABC’s of a typical Home Plumbing System.

“A”– Fresh Water Supply. (water In)

In the Chicagoland area residential homes have water pipes that are connected to your home that supply either fresh water supplied from a city source or an individual dedicated well water source.

The most common supply system in Northern Illinois is a (City Water System.).

Typically, residential and established cities in the suburbs are dependent on Water Supplied from a city water system. City engineers have designed and built a series of underground pipes that are called ‘Water Mains” these are designed to run under city streets for easy servicing.

    City Water Supply:
    Advantages of City Supplied Water.

    • When your home is permanently connected to the city water supply. Your family can depend on a reliable flow of water into your home without the use of any additional equipment or electrical power to power a pump system.
    • A clean, tested, treated and reliable water supply is provided from City Water systems. Almost always worry-free water for your family.

    Well Water Supply:
Many homeowners have well supplied water and traditionally these homes reside outside city or town water boundaries.

    • No service fee for well drawn water. Once the cost for a pumps, testing, drilling and assembly are finished you can have a reliable flow of water at essentially no cost. Up front costs can be defrayed with no charge monthly service over the long term.
    • Pure clean ground water free from Chlorination Most wells will provide homeowners with a lifetime clean safe drinking water.
    • No water restrictions. Well water is controlled from the owner of the home and this right of water ownership has no restrictions on usage times of amounts.

HT Strenger suggests testing your well water annually and always be alerted by any changes in the taste and a cloudy appearance or coloration. Plus take note of the local geography and changes to the area that may effect your well water.

A well pump and tank require electricity to function, a battery back up system or a small generator can be used if your property is likely to have power outages or restrictions.

“B”– Move the Water in your home. (Plumbing)

Now that water is supplied to your home. How is it efficiently distributed through out the the home to provide for all its functions ?

Water Pressure moves your water naturally through your home.

Sometimes, the way water flows in your home depends on how high your water supplier’s tank is. The tank is usually taller than the houses nearby, so gravity helps push the water down and give it pressure.

    Hot Water Heaters:

Fresh water is directly pushed into the plumbing lines of your home. Because of the climate of your home its not uncommon for very cold water to be supplied in your home at all times. Warmer water can be through out homes that are in hot arid climates like Arizona and New Mexico. Hot water that is used for bathing, laundry, automatic dishwashers and faucets needs to take detour to a Water Heater before it can be used . Hot water temperature can be controlled by a stand alone gas or electric water heater.

Water temp. is regulated by a thermostat that is built into the the water heater – ask your HT Strenger Technician about how to set and maintain the best water temperature for your application.

Plumbing Tip : In Illinois Water Heaters should be installed and serviced by a certified and licensed plumber.

Most water heaters use electricity, natural gas, or solar to operate.

“C”– Move the Water out of your home. (Sewer)

Most every home relies on Gravity to drain away and away from your home into the city sewer system or into a catch basin that leads to a septic field.

Because waste water is not a desirable it is the main reason service plumbers are in high demand – wastewater and damage done from water to your home is not a problem homeowners wants to experience.

Keeping your sewer system clean and free flowing is key to a pleasurable home ownership experience.

    Sewer Clean Out Access Points.

Plumbing systems are designed for access for common clogged or slow moving problems. , removable plugs allow access to the system and a trained technician with the correct tools can un-clog or repair most clogged systems the first time. Sometimes foundations or land can move and disconnect the sewer line from the home and main sewer – Installing a new Sewer System is most of the time your only alternative.

    Plumbing Venting

Many homes have sewer vents that release  gas and reduce pressure so sewer pipes can flow freely. Drains with proper venting allow wastewater to flow through the system efficiently.

    Drain Traps

Curved sections of pipe found beneath your sink, built into the base of your toilet and in your homes basement sewer drains prevent sewer gases from escaping. Water remains in the trap and forms a barrier to keep sewer odors from your living area.

Preventing clogs in the drain traps.

Try to keep all objects out of your drains that could clog your system. Prevent clogging by using strainer filters that keep food and debris out of sink drains, Avoid pouring Grease or Oils down your drains or toilets.  Try to keep hair out of  drains,  avoid flushing anything down your toilet except waste and toilet paper. Do not use wipes unless they are thrown into the garbage.

    Some Sewer and Draining Fundamentals

Use these common sense guidelines to avoid or delay a costly home owner problem.

    • Keep your drains clear.
    • Inspect your pipes.
    • Drain your water heater.
    • Winterize your plumbing.
